EVM Calculator - Earned Value Management
Calculate comprehensive EVM metrics for project performance analysis. Track cost and schedule variances, performance indices, and project forecasting.
About EVM Calculator
Earned Value Management (EVM) is a project management methodology that integrates scope, schedule, and cost to provide a comprehensive view of project performance. This calculator helps you analyze project health and predict future performance.
Key EVM Concepts:
Planned Value (PV):
The authorized budget assigned to scheduled work. Also known as Budgeted Cost of Work Scheduled (BCWS).
Earned Value (EV):
The authorized budget assigned to completed work. Also known as Budgeted Cost of Work Performed (BCWP).
Actual Cost (AC):
The actual cost incurred for completed work. Also known as Actual Cost of Work Performed (ACWP).
Budget at Completion (BAC):
The total authorized budget for the project.
Performance Metrics:
Cost Variance (CV):
- CV = EV - AC
- Positive = Under Budget
- Negative = Over Budget
Schedule Variance (SV):
- SV = EV - PV
- Positive = Ahead of Schedule
- Negative = Behind Schedule
Cost Performance Index (CPI):
- CPI = EV / AC
- >1 = Under Budget
- <1=Over Budget
Schedule Performance Index (SPI):
- SPI = EV / PV
- >1 = Ahead of Schedule
- <1=Behind Schedule
Forecasting Metrics:
Estimate at Completion (EAC):
The expected total cost when the project is completed. EAC = BAC / CPI
Estimate to Complete (ETC):
The expected cost to finish the remaining work. ETC = EAC - AC
Variance at Completion (VAC):
The difference between the original budget and the estimated final cost. VAC = BAC - EAC
To Complete Performance Index (TCPI):
The required performance to achieve the original budget. TCPI = (BAC - EV) / (BAC - AC)
Performance Interpretation:
CPI > 1.0 and SPI > 1.0:
Excellent performance - project is under budget and ahead of schedule.
CPI > 1.0 and SPI < 1.0:
Good cost performance but behind schedule. Focus on schedule recovery.
CPI < 1.0 and SPI> 1.0:
Good schedule performance but over budget. Focus on cost control.
CPI < 1.0 and SPI < 1.0:
Poor performance - over budget and behind schedule. Immediate intervention required.
Common EVM Applications:
- Construction Projects: Track progress against planned milestones and budgets
- Software Development: Monitor development progress and resource utilization
- Manufacturing: Control production costs and delivery schedules
- Research Projects: Manage research timelines and funding allocation
- Consulting Projects: Track billable hours and project profitability
- Government Projects: Ensure compliance with budget and schedule requirements
Formulas:
Cost Variance (CV) = Earned Value (EV) - Actual Cost (AC)
Schedule Variance (SV) = Earned Value (EV) - Planned Value (PV)
Cost Performance Index (CPI) = Earned Value (EV) / Actual Cost (AC)
Schedule Performance Index (SPI) = Earned Value (EV) / Planned Value (PV)
Estimate at Completion (EAC) = Budget at Completion (BAC) / Cost Performance Index (CPI)
Estimate to Complete (ETC) = Estimate at Completion (EAC) - Actual Cost (AC)
Best Practice: Use EVM metrics regularly to identify trends early and take corrective action before issues become critical.
