About VAT (Value Added Tax)

Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax levied on goods and services at each stage of the supply chain where value is added. It's a common form of indirect taxation used in many countries worldwide.

How VAT Works

VAT Calculation Formula:

VAT Amount = Net Amount × (VAT Rate ÷ 100)

Gross Amount = Net Amount + VAT Amount

Net Amount = Gross Amount ÷ (1 + VAT Rate ÷ 100)

VAT vs Sales Tax

VAT (Value Added Tax):
  • Applied at each stage of production
  • Businesses can claim input tax credits
  • More complex but fairer system
  • Common in Europe and many countries
  • Helps prevent tax cascading
Sales Tax:
  • Applied only at final sale to consumer
  • No input tax credits for businesses
  • Simpler but can lead to tax cascading
  • Common in the United States
  • May result in higher effective tax rates

VAT Registration and Compliance

  • Germany: €22,000
