About Due Date Calculation

The Due Date Calculator is a professional tool designed to estimate the expected date of delivery (EDD) for pregnant women. It supports four widely accepted medical methods:

  • Last Menstrual Period (LMP): This is the most common method, based on the first day of your last menstrual period. The due date is calculated by adding 280 days (40 weeks) to this date, assuming a regular 28-day cycle. Adjustments are made for different cycle lengths.
  • Conception Date: If the exact date of conception is known, the due date is estimated by adding 266 days (38 weeks) to the conception date. This method is often used for women who track ovulation or have assisted reproduction.
  • Ultrasound: Early pregnancy ultrasounds provide a highly accurate estimate of gestational age and due date by measuring the size of the embryo or fetus. This method is especially useful if the LMP is uncertain or cycles are irregular.
  • IVF Transfer Date: For pregnancies achieved through in vitro fertilization, the due date is calculated based on the embryo transfer date and the age of the embryo at transfer (day 3, day 5, or day 6). This method is highly precise because the exact timing of fertilization and implantation is known.

Medical Background:
The estimated due date (EDD) is a key reference point in prenatal care. While only about 4% of babies are born on their exact due date, most births occur between 37 and 42 weeks of gestation. The EDD helps guide prenatal testing, monitor fetal growth, and plan for delivery. It is important to note that the due date is an estimate, not a guarantee, and individual pregnancies may vary.

Trimester Classification:
- First Trimester: Weeks 1–13
- Second Trimester: Weeks 14–27
- Third Trimester: Weeks 28–42

Important Milestones:
- Week 3: Conception
- Week 4: Pregnancy test may become positive
- Week 6: Fetal heartbeat detectable by ultrasound
- Week 13: Risk of miscarriage decreases
- Week 18: Fetus can hear sounds, gender may be determined
- Week 23: Premature babies may survive with intensive care
- Week 28: Lungs mature, baby can breathe with support
- Week 38: Full term

Clinical Use:
The due date is used by healthcare professionals to schedule prenatal visits, screenings, and interventions. It is also important for expectant parents to plan for the arrival of their baby. This calculator provides a user-friendly and medically accurate way to estimate your due date using the latest clinical guidelines.
