Grade Calculator
Use this calculator to find out the grade of a course based on weighted averages. This calculator accepts both numerical as well as letter grades. It also can calculate the grade needed for the remaining assignments in order to get a desired grade for an ongoing course.
About Grade Calculator
This comprehensive grade calculator helps students and educators calculate weighted course grades and plan for final exams. It supports both letter grades and numerical percentages, making it versatile for different grading systems.
Key Features:
Weighted Grade Calculation
Calculate your course grade based on weighted averages of assignments, exams, and other assessments. Each component can have different weights reflecting its importance.
Multiple Grade Formats
Supports both letter grades (A+, B-, etc.) and numerical percentages (85, 92.5, etc.). The calculator automatically converts between formats for accurate calculations.
Final Grade Planning
Determine what grade you need on your final exam to achieve your desired course grade. This helps with strategic study planning and goal setting.
Dynamic Assignment Management
Add or remove assignments as needed. The calculator supports up to 20 different assignments with customizable names, grades, and weights.
How Weighted Grades Work:
Weighted Average Formula:
Final Grade = Σ(Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weights)
Each assignment's contribution to your final grade is calculated by multiplying the grade by its weight percentage, then dividing by the total weight.
Example Calculation:
If you have:
- Homework (A = 93%) with 20% weight
- Midterm (B+ = 87%) with 30% weight
- Final (B = 83%) with 50% weight
Final Grade = (93×0.20 + 87×0.30 + 83×0.50) ÷ (0.20 + 0.30 + 0.50) = 85.7% = B
Final Grade Planning Formula:
Grade Needed on Final = (Desired Grade - Current Contribution) ÷ Final Weight
Where:
- Current Contribution = Current Grade × (100% - Final Weight)
- Desired Grade = Your target final course grade
- Final Weight = Percentage weight of the final exam
Common Use Cases:
Course Grade Tracking
Keep track of your current grade throughout the semester by entering completed assignments and their weights.
Final Exam Preparation
Determine the minimum grade needed on your final exam to achieve your target course grade.
Grade Goal Setting
Set realistic grade goals based on your current performance and remaining assignments.
Academic Planning
Plan your study strategy by understanding which assignments have the most impact on your final grade.
Tips for Accurate Calculations:
Verify Weights
Ensure that all assignment weights add up to 100% for the most accurate results. If weights don't total 100%, the calculator will still work but may not reflect your actual grading system.
Use Consistent Grade Format
You can mix letter grades and percentages in the same calculation. The calculator will automatically convert between formats.
Plan Realistically
When using the final grade planning feature, consider whether the required grade is achievable given your study habits and the exam difficulty.
Regular Updates
Update your grades as you receive them to maintain an accurate picture of your current standing in the course.
Letter Grade Reference
The calculator uses the following letter grades and their typical corresponding numerical equivalents based on grade points.
| Letter Grade | GPA | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 | 97-100% |
| A | 4.0 | 93-96% |
| A- | 3.7 | 90-92% |
